Our story

From a downtown stand to 11 neighborhood stores.

  1. 1922

    A stand on Washington Avenue

Art Baryames, a Greek immigrant from a village near Sparta, opens a newspaper, shoe-shine and hat-cleaning stand in downtown Lansing, on Washington Avenue near Washtenaw.

  2. 1930s

    Pressing joins the shine

Garment pressing is added, so a gentleman can get his shoes shined, his hat cleaned and his suit pressed in one stop.

  3. 1950s–1970s

A second generation builds it out

Art’s son, Chuck Baryames, grows the company quickly by putting quality and service first.

  4. Today

    Still the family business

Chuck’s son, Art Baryames, leads the company. Baryames now cares for Greater Lansing’s clothes and household items in 11 stores and on neighborhood pickup routes.

How we care for your clothes

Every garment, checked twice.

Whether you drop off at a store or we pick up from your home, your clothes go through the same careful process.

  1. Tag and track

Each garment gets a small ironed-on barcode tag you never need to remove, so we always know what you brought in and where it goes.

  2. Sort by care

We sort by color, fabric and the care label, then choose dry cleaning, wet cleaning or laundering for each item.

  3. Clean gently

Our dry cleaning uses a PERC-free, organic-based cleaning fluid. Fine washables are wet cleaned, and dress shirts are laundered.

  4. Treat spots by hand

After cleaning, our team checks for stains that need more attention and treats them by hand.

  5. Press and finish

Experienced finishers press and steam each piece as if it were their own.

  6. Inspect and bag

A second inspection catches wrinkles, loose threads and missing buttons. Our system counts every item before your order is bagged.
